The Post-Journal

NILES, Ohio For the second straight night, the Jamestown Jammers (32-41) split a twin bill with first-place Mahoning Valley Scrappers (47-26) in the Pinckney Division of the New York-Penn League.

The Jammers came from behind to win the opener, 5-4, and lost a heart-breaking 1-0 decision in the second game.

The Jammers have another game with Mahoning Valley at 7:05 p.m. today.

Trailing, 4-3, entering the seventh inning of the first game, the Jammers pushed two runs to make reliever Brandon Bastow the winner for the first time.

Cory Burns (3-2) replaced Marty Popham in the seventh for MV and was tagged with the loss.

Eric Kanaby walked with one out and stole second base, then, moved to third base on a Burns' wild pitch. Paulino grounded out as Kanaby came across with the tying run at 4-4.

Nate Simon singled and Zack Moore pinch run and stole second. Mike Pasek singled to drive in Moore with the winning run.

The Jammers were down 4-1 when they came to bat in the sixth against Popham. Kyle Jensen slammed a two-out, two-run home run to bring the club within a run.

For Jensen, this was his fourth of the season and third in the last week.

A.J. Ramos got his eighth save by retiring the Scrappers in order in then ninth.

Kenny Fernandez gave up two runs in the second when the Scrappers' Juan Aponte hit a two-run home run.

Austin Markel got the Jammers on the scoreboard by homering leading off the fourth.

Mahoning Valley added a run in the fourth on a double by Greg Folgia and a triple by Jesus Brito. The Scrappers pushed across a tally in the fifth when the walking Tim Palincsar scored on Jason Kipnis' force out.

The second game took only 1:33 to play and only five hits were recorded with three by MV and two by the Jammers.

Austin Armstrong, who pitched for Auburn earlier this season, made his debut with the Jammers a successful one by hurling five innings, giving up two hits, striking out four and walking one.

On the other side, Kyle Smith pitched a two-hit shutout for four innings and Antoine Hubbard (2-0) took over and was perfect the final three innings with five strikeouts.

The only run came in the sixth against Geury Ramirez (2-3). Moises Montero drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second by Jordan Henry. A passed ball by Mark Wyatt put him on third and Casey Frawley delivered the only run with a single to left field.

The hits by the Jammers were back-to-back singles by Kanaby and Jose Torres in the second. A double play by Carlos Paulino and a pop up by Wyatt ended that threat.

In the first, the Jammers had their most serious threat when Markel walked and Chris Wade was hit by-a-pitch. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch but Smith really bore down to strike out Jensen and Dustin Dickerson and retire Chase Austin on an outfield fly.
