RANDOLPH - When Samantha Skudlarek, a stylist at Sennsations Salon & Day Spa, filled out an online application to be a "swapper" as part of the Style Network's hit reality show, "Split Ends," she never dreamed they would call back within two hours.
The producer called to say that she thought the salon sounded perfect - just what they were looking for. To participate in the reality show, the hairstylists had to be licensed and "willing to take on some challenges," said Jennifer Senn.
Ms. Skudlarek was up to the adventure - thinking it would be fun to experience life in a new salon and probably a big city.
Part of the allure for "Split Ends" producers was the rural setting. They found the Amish culture of the area fascinating, stated salon owner, Jennifer Senn. The show is formatted much like "Wife Swap.''
Producers attempt to match up a stylist and a salon that are complete opposites. "We all learned that reality TV is not quite so real ...," stated Senn. "We truly did it for fun and have learned some new things and taught Denis a few things along the way."
Denis Chetzan was the stylist that swapped places with Samantha.
On April 14, a camera crew and producers from "Split Ends'' - 10 people in all - came to Randolph and filmed Skudlarek during her regular work day.
The next day, Denis Chetzan, a stylist from the Allen Edwards Salon in Brentwood, Calif., switched places with Samantha and travelled cross country. The following day, staff at Sennsations Salon met Denis and spent the next three days working with him.
Allen Edwards Salon, and creator Allen, became famous when he created Farrah Fawcett's signature hairstyle. They have a large clientele of celebrities and charge about $200 per haircut.
The day of filming was long and the crew didn't get a chance to see many sights during their brief visit. But while here, the John and Julie Milliman hosted a bonfire for the crew of the show. So friendly and warm was everyone in the community, the crew all remarked. Crewmembers stated this was the friendliest and most accommodating place they have ever worked. Stylist Denis of California stated he is planning to make a return visit to Randolph - minus the camera crews.
A premier party is being held at the Randolph Fire Hall starting at 8 p.m. Saturday night. The show will air on the Style Network Channel at 9 p.m. Saturday. The premier is open to anyone wishing to attend.
