Sylvia Joy Maitland, 73, of 75 Norton Ave., Jamestown, passed away peacefully at 1 p.m. Thursday August 6, 2009, in WCA Hospital, following a courageous, yearlong battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family.
A native of Cattaraugus, N.Y., she was born Dec. 29, 1935, a daughter of the late Asa and Marian Manning Warner.
Prior to her retirement, she worked as New Albion Town Clerk and Cattaraugus Village Clerk for 12 years.
She was a committed Christian her entire life and her faith was the foundation for raising her six children. She was a member of Roberts Memorial Free Methodist Church in Cattaraugus, the Little Valley Wesleyan Church, where
she served as treasurer, and most recently, the Falconer First Wesleyan Church, where she served as a board
member. Her greatest joy came from being a mother and grandmother. She was an enthusiastic fan of her grandchildren's various activities. Whether it was sports or music, school or church, she was always there. Her grandchildren will greatly miss challenging her to a board or card game.
Surviving are her beloved husband of 27 years, Richard Maitland; five daughters: Pamela Caprino of Lakewood, Deborah Swauger and Susan Waite of West Ellicott, Cynthia (Lewis) Aronson of Bemus Point and Tina Swauger of Ellington; a son, Tim (Aruna) Swauger of Seattle, Wash; 11 grandchildren: Gabriel, Josiah and Claressa Caprino, Caleb (Michelle) Waite, Hannah and Sarah Waite, Justin Hanft, Rebecca (Chris) Aronson-Milz, Michael and Antoine Aronson and Megan Sylvia Swauger, two great-grandchildren, Colin Waite and MaLiyah Waite; three sisters: Esther (Wendell) Wilcox, Evelyn Hooker and Carol Paddock; two brothers, Ron (Jane) Warner and Jim (Linda) Warner, several nieces and nephews; and Tami and Courtney Gustafson, who were like a daughter and granddaughter.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Zion Covenant Church, Fairmount Ave. Jamestown, NY. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Falconer, N.Y.
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home, Third St., Jamestown, NY.
