NAPOLI - A 20-year-old man from Cattaraugus faces charges after leading Cattaraugus County Sheriff's deputies on a 3-mile chase in his horse-drawn buggy.
Jonas J. Hershberger, 20, of Cattaraugus was charged with overdriving animals, second-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree obstructing governmental administration Monday after Hershberger, attempting to elude deputies investigating a stolen horse and buggy, drove through fields and into woods near Napoli.
He led authorities through roads, fields and eventually through the woods, where he stopped the horse and fled on foot. Deputies didn't find him at the scene but recovered the horse and buggy, which were brought back to the person who reported them stolen.
A short time later, Hershberger was taken into custody at his home on Frank Road. He was arraigned and sent to the Cattaraugus County Jail in lieu of $250 bail.
