Families have for "years and years" visited the Bentley Sanctuary just off Fluvanna Avenue in Jamestown on the second Sunday of each May, participating in the Audubon Center's annual Mother's Day Wildflower Walk.
"It is a wonderful tradition," said Ruth Lundin, president. "We've been doing it for years and years, and Jack Gulvin has been leading it since long before I came. He is a retired forester and natural history person who is also known for his Purple Martin walks at Chautauqua Institution."
Scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, the annual Wildflower Walk is at the Bentley Sanctuary near Strunk Road in Jamestown, not at the Audubon Center's Riverside Road location. The Audubon recommends that individuals planning on attending the Wildflower Walk wear sturdy, mud-proof shoes or boots.

"The walk is not a long one, but it's over uneven ground, which makes it slower going," Lundin said. "The emphasis is on seeing many flowers, not going a great distance. And of course, it is also the beginning of a real peak bird migration season.
"The area has always been known, since before we owned the property, as being a wonderful place for wildflowers," Lundin continued. "Roger Tory Peterson himself loved to go there, as he didn't just love birds but also loved flowers and plants."
