Victor C. Digirolamo, 81, of 35 Peach St., passed away at 1:12 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, in his home.
A lifelong area resident, he was born Jan. 5, 1928, in Falconer, the son of the late Nicholas and Mary Camarata Digirolamo.
Victor was a graduate of Falconer High School, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II in the Pacific Theatre. After serving his country in the Armed Forces, Victor received a degree in chiropractic medicine and was employed as a chiropractor in Washington, D.C. from 1948 to 1954. He was also employed by American Linen Company and prior to retirement in 1988 was employed as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. Victor along with his brothers had also owned and operated Digie's Bar in Jamestown from 1973 to 1978.
He was a 50-year member of the American Legion, served as commander of the Ira Lou Spring Post in 1993. He also was a long-time treasurer and board member of the post and was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars. Victor was a member of the Jamestown Old Timers Baseball Association and enjoyed cooking at home and at the American Legion, traveling, casino's and in earlier years enjoyed archery and hunting.
He is survived by his wife, Lawana VanName Digirolamo, whom he married July 11, 1981, in Rushford, N.Y.; three children: Sharon (Charlie) Purdy of Celoron, Victor M. (Sue) Digirolamo of Panama and David Digirolamo of Jamestown; eight grand children: Nicholas (Kathy) Purdy, Renee Purdy, Ashley Digirolamo, Amber Digirolamo, David Digirolamo Jr., Adam Digirolamo, Michelle (Jason) Snyder and Scott Anderson; three great-grandchildren: Gabriel Purdy, Jared Minekime and Jayden Snyder; four brothers: Paul Digirolamo of New Port Richey, Fla., Samuel Digirolamo of Panama, John Digirolamo of Falconer and Joseph Digirolamo of Randolph; and a sister, Jennie Dahar of Olean.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Nicholas and Henry Digirolamo; and two sisters: Rose and Carmela Digirolamo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church. The Rev. Dennis Mende, pastor of Holy Apostles Parish, will be celebrant. Burial will be in White Cemetery, Rushford, N.Y.
Friends will be received by the family from 6 to 9 p.m. today in the Falconer Funeral Home. A Christian Wake service will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
