Donald J. Merritt Sr., 54, of Mayville, formerly of Union City, Pa., died Sept. 22, 2008, at St. Vincent Health Center, Erie, Pa.
Born Dec.7, 1953, in Erie, Pa., he was the son of Donald M. and Helen (Zipperi) Merritt, and the husband of 16 years to Tammy (Sipes) Merritt. Mr. Merritt was employed by Russell Standard as a heavy equipment operator and served in the 82nd Airborne of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict. He enjoyed football and softball with his children, NASCAR, sport activities with his children, boxing, coaching wrestling, and going on cruises with his wife.
In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include sons: Donald J. Merritt Jr., of Mayville, David M. Niemeyer of Mayville, and Bryan L. Merritt of Mill Village, Pa.; daughters: Amanda A. Niemeyer of Mayville, Kristina M. Merritt of Mayville, Kimberly D. Merritt of Waterford, Pa., and Denise Romecki of Mill Village, Pa; a sister, Pamela Mooney of Union City, Pa; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Donald was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents.
Visitation will be Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at Thomas E. Morgan Funeral Home, 75 North Main St., Union City, PA, 16438.
A funeral service will be held there Friday at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Linda Chambers of First United Methodist Church, officiating. A graveside service will follow in Magnolia Cemetery, Mayville, at 12:45 p.m., with the Rev. Teets, officiating.
