Position Indeed Requires Bipartisanship

June 11, 2008
The Post-Journal
To the Reader’s Forum:

Congratulations to The Post-Journal for its Sunday, June 8, 2008, editorial, ‘‘Position Requires Bipartisanship.’’ I couldn’t agree more that Chuck Cornell is definitely not a regional leader.

As you say in the editorial, ‘‘his history as a devoted Democrat who cherishes all things Democrat ....’’ should also have noted that he is programmed to recognize Jamestown Democrats only. Having read many times in The P-J that he is concerned about housing — building, re-building, upgrading, etc. — he cites Jamestown 99 percent of the time. Therefore, regional does not have a recurring place in his vocabulary.

As for regionalism, I have come to suspect that word because most of the time it means ‘‘turn everything over to government.’’ As noted in the editorial, ‘‘Chuck brings the background and experience needed to continue to advance the goal of regional development and governance.’’

While this may be true of his ability, it does not fit the task. One only need look to the past to see how many of Jamestown’s services have been turned over to Chautauqua County, thereby relieving Jamestown of spending too much money because the rest of the county’s taxpayers foot the bills.

You can be sure we’ll be keeping a sharp eye on SUNY Fredonia’s Center for Regional Development and Governance to make sure it encompasses ALL of Chautauqua County.
