Man found guilty of attempted murder in NYC

October 26, 2013
Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City man has been convicted of attempted murder related to a 2011 incident in which he's accused of firing a gun at two police sergeants.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance says Friday a jury also convicted Matthew Melendez of attempted aggravated assault on a police officer and criminal possession of a weapon.

A lawyer for the 21-year-old man did not return a message seeking comment. He is expected to be sentenced Nov. 20.

Prosecutors say Melendez shot a 9-mm pistol at the two NYPD officers who were chasing after him in Harlem. They say Melendez fired three shots at the officers before his gun jammed. There were no injuries in the incident.
