PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a 21-year-old woman is in critical condition at a hospital burn unit after a fire broke out in a northern New York apartment house.

Plattsburgh firefighters tell WIRY-AM that the fire was reported around 1 a.m. Friday in a three-story structure with several apartments whose tenants include students at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

Fire Chief Randy Stone says Alexa Limato was hanging from a third-floor window when firefighters arrived, but she fainted and fell back inside the building. She was eventually pulled from the burning structure by firefighters.

She was taken to the Plattsburgh hospital, then airlifted to Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington, Vt. Officials say Limato is now at a Syracuse hospital.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
