Another federal program. This one will require more standardized testing to "see if it's working". Teachers are already teaching to standardized tests. Do we really need a federal program to tell school teachers across American how to teach math and reading? I don't think so. But, if we do, it is time to close schools. And, of course, the unintended consequences that will follow the federal mandates, including higher school taxes.

Common Core isn't going to make any student in America excel, go to school more, increase the number of high school graduates, etc.

What a poorly written piece. The byline leads me to believe it was a submitted article and that The PJ couldn't be bothered to cover the meeting on its own. Sad, considering that Common Core and concerns over it are a topic of great discussion.

How did parents react to the information presented at the meeting? What were some of their comments? How did school officials respond to those comments and reactions? And etc.

The article states plainly that "it was a meeting focused on the specifics of implementation ..." and that's great. It's a good and valid discussion to have. So what exactly ARE the specifics of implementation at Southwestern? How about some downloadable documents for readers who could not attend?

What a disappointment, Mr. Whittaker. You and your reporters can do better.

I'm an educated person and it's a sad day when I have to Google my kid's homework! I'm sure I'm not the only parent feeling this way. Thanks NYS Dept of Ed for making nightly homework miserable for the entire house!

Interesting comment since they make decisions and never talk to anyone....it was already put in place...now talk to the parents...

Kudos to Southwestern! Sounds like they are doing it right...including the parents and adapting to the new standards in an intelligent fashion.
