Fourth Of July Is Not A Day To Judge Others

July 19, 2013

To The Reader’s Forum: I was rather disappointed to wake up on July 4th, the day we should be celebrating independence and unity as a nation, to discover that The Post-Journal, in what could only be......

July 4th is a day to celebrate freedom of speech just like you did today.

Spot on Carlaw. Even the KKK has rights to peaceful demonstrations, no matter how much one disagrees with them.

Well said below.

I understand the authors point but at the same time I think its irrelevant when an article/letter ect... is printed. Gay marriage is legal in NY, and Gay couples have the same rights federally as straights. We know where we all stand on this. I think its time to move on to the next smoke scree issue.

Actually, from a scientific standpoint, very little is understood about homosexuality - especially lesbianism.

We all judge others every day of the year, none more blatantly or vocally than liberals. All perversions are disgusting, loathsome, immoral, and depraved every day of the year. Few things would be more glorious than the status quo ante where we could go for decades at a time without hearing of the world's worst gross-out.

We know very little about the Neuroscience behind attraction hetero or homo. There is some understanding of what attracts people to personalities and other non physical attributes but thats more psychology and even that gets into the nature v. nurture debate. Pure physical attraction is still large part a mystery.

I'll take the July 4th letter and TROG'S comment over this Soderburg letter any day. Soderburg's is a real stinker

Cont. to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity.

Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My father fought alongside men whose parents had come straight over from Germany , Italy , France and Japan . None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan . They were defending the United States of America as one people.

cont. Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr. Lujan why today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer. Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be documented. Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home.

They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture. Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws

Part 1 ....So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should tear down the Statue of Liberty because the people now in question aren't being treated the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry.

Why is this still an issue? So the gays want to get married. What does it matter?

So carlaw, what did the letter writer say that has ANYTHING to do with freedom of speech?

Some people apparently do not understand what freedom of speech is.

You don't think if Mexicans would wait in line to come here legally. If it was as easy as getting in line in San Diego or El Paso signing a few sheets of paper and becoming a citizen most Mexicans would do that. I know people in the military with the last names Gonzales, Perez, and Vargas. Seem hispanic to me. People in this area confuse Puerto Ricans who are citizens and go back and forth with all hispanic immigrants. Most Mexican immigrants I know who have been here more than a few years can speak english well enough to get by and their children are on paths to becoming successful. They come for the same reason Euros did for jobs. But employers here want the labor, but don't want them to become citizens. Don't limit your sample size on hispanics and immigration to WNY especially Chaut County.

Hate, fear-mongering, discrimination, division. That's how you are labeled when you disagree with the intolerant left. I find it ironic that he wants to silence free speech on independence day.

Ahhh, the "free speech" defense. The last refuge of the scoundrel. Only a conservative could consider denouncing denial of equality as "intolerance."

Credence, gays getting married is not a freedom of speech, it falls under freedom to assemble.
