Re: Foley refusing to answer questions ..... Just like a Pre-schooler ... Pouts and runs out of the room when he doesn't get his way. Typical Foley arrogance - we're entitled to our own opinions as long as they agree with his. A public official who can not maintain composure, respectfully respond to inquiries - especially fiscal and proactively collaborate ... UNBELIEVABLE!!

Why is the sheriff's department growing when the county is shrinking in population. It's time for the leaders of this county to stand up to Sheriff Joe and let him take a 10% cut to his empire

Notice the sheriff did not compare his budget to other comparable counties sheriff departments in NYS. He spends the most per capita or per square mile. Pads his budget with one time federal grants he calls free money, and enhanced patrol fees (pay for protection racket) and a profiteering mentality to police enforcement where he relies on DWIs and traffic violaions to tune of $700K income a year to his coffers. His department should be jail guards and court orderlies like they are in other counties. His acions of taking on larger role in policing have led to the elimination NYS Trooper and local PD budgets in county and put policing costs on the backs of all county tax payers wether you want it or not..

snowshovel: ALL of those tasks can be accomplished as well or better while still improving efficiency instead of this continued bloat.

I think the sherrifs department spends a lot of money. However I think there are some sour grapes on Couglins comments. It sounds to me like he still has some anger management issues.

No one ever complains about budgets when law enforcement arrests murderers and kidnappers. No one complains about budgets when the sheriff rescues people about to drown in Chautauqua Lake or Lake Erie. No one complains about budgets when the District Attorney prosecutes criminals and sends them to prison. No one complains about budgets when they call 911 and someone answers the call and then sends help.

I don't think a 10% cut in the Sheriff's dept would be a terrible thing. It's grown larger and larger every year.
