I hope the world is more considerate if Douglas should ever need help!

The Hispanics get treated better than our own people do. My deaf uncle couldn't even get help with a sign language translator...and he speaks English.

"The Hispanics get treated better than our own people do."

This is By the fact that the Hispanic Navigator was canned?

S.O.S. Pretending it's racism against Hispanics, when it's actually a language requirement they don't meet. If you went to Ecuador to work, and couldn't get hired because you didn't speak their language...would that be racist? We're such cowards.

Not only do they come here and insist on not learning our language, they insist on telling us what words and phrases of our own language we can't use. Gutless Americans allow it.

All of the minorities get treated better than those of us who were born and raised here. They are given everything and do nothing but come here and sign up for help and they receive it the same day. I need help to get health insurance and they won't help me and I pay taxes and live here.

Spanish people ARE our people. Puerto Rico has been an American territory since 1898. We got it through VIOLENT CONQUEST. Same as the great Southwest. The Mexican War and Spanish American wars were wars of aggression and conquest. Spanish was, and is the native language in Puerto Rico. Yes, there are lots of Hispanic peope from other countries here, but the vast majority of them are INCREDIBLY hard working people. Maybe Chautauqua County has gotten the worst ones, but I doubt it. This is an OLD song about hate and ignorance.

The Author and the comments on this post are a very poor reflection of our community. Until 50 years ago, English was but a minority language in Jamestown. The USA has no national language. If our community were on the southern border, you would speak Spanish. In Dearborn you'd speak Arabic. In Chicago you could speak Polish, Russian or Chinese. The list goes on.

Are these communities not American? Why must they learn English? Why don't you learn Spanish?

The bigotry that continues to be displayed from a narrow slice of our community is very sad to see and made worse when put into print.

Doggie, stop burning the cross in your front yard. In my family, Swedish was what was spoken. I know of many classmates which were similar with German and Italian. We used English as well in school. If you go to the Southside, there are still numerous homes owned by people whose first language is Italian and Swedish.

No one is saying they should not learn English. They will. They should not be required to learn English; that is my point.

You continue to show your ignorance regarding understanding of the political spectrum is woefully insufficient. Anyone with an understanding of the various platforms will see that my advocacy is clearly libertarian. Note, I am not advocating for government support of any program for any group. I'm am taking a stance again the bigotry that continues to be exemplified.

What would bald faced lying left brained libertarians do without "bigot" in their vocabulary. When's the last time you saw a cross burning tool? Why is it great the other countries (including Puerto Rico) have their own language and we shouldn't? BTW..PR has is English.

Ohhh ... 50s! Must be you failed American history at JHS? Tell me, who settled Florida? How about the Dakotas? Who founded what is now New York City?

America does not have a national language because nationality and language have no relationship. America is one of the youngest nations on Earth and we speak over 250 major languages within our population. English, which is a creole, became de facto the language of business because it was easy and many people who lived under the Commonwealth came to America in the 1800s thus making it an easy trading language. The same can be said for Swahili in East Africa or Hindi in India. Both are languages of convenience.

If you would get out of your dim bubble, you'd see you do not have anything to fear. Also, if you loved freedom, you would support people to be successful regardless of their language.

It is clear I hit a nerve with you as your hatred is just there, below the surface. You cannot hide it. We all see it. Call it what you wil

Oh Doggie ... You must be a kissing cousin of 50s. Read my answer there.

They are part of society. Proportionately, they are as productive as any other ethnic group. They have the same rights to language education as any other group.

As with 50s, your hatred of people who are not like you is a plague to our culture. How about you volunteer with 50s to provide a 'native speaker' (the irony of that one is funny) workshops so those that wish can expand their English vocabulary.

Yeah, I thought so. You'd rather stand back and hate from a distance as it is easier for you that way.

Doggie, I see you are using that dusty dictionary of yours which you rarely crack open. I'm pleased that you are trying to use the grey matter. There might be hope for you yet!

Just did a quick check, Doggie. The Police column here in the PJ is not dominated by Hispanic people. The Most Wanted list has only one Hispanic person. Seems they are law abiding so that part of your retort is false.

Let's look at the numbers! There are about 133,000 people in the County. 6.3% are Hispanic. That is about 21,100 as I know you don't like to do the math yourself. The County's Health Department says 6.5% of the population speaks a language other than English. Of that group, only 2.3% of the population speaks English 'less than very well'. And then, there are 2.4% of the population that are non-Spanish, Indo-European speakers.

Conclusion: Spanish speakers are no more prevalent in our County than speakers of other languages. Go look at it Doggie! See: Chautauqua CHA_2010-2013_final.pdf

In regards to the work question, Doggie. As I go around our city, I see people of various ethnic backgrounds being productive. I see there are people of Hispanic, Black and Asian ethnicity working in our service sector. I know on Allen Street at the factories and up at Bush, there are people of various backgrounds which are working very hard.

Take off your glasses Doggie. Stop blaming a couple thousand people for a problem of which they are no more a cause that you are.

In closing, what new names do you have for me, Doggie? I'm betting you have exhausted your vocabulary. Give me your address and I'll send you a thesaurus to help you out as I would love for you to add a bit of flare and creativity. Surely, you have better than kindergarten insults.

Back to the drawing board, Lone. You are not using a statical sample. You are very bluntly combining two fallacies: argumentum ad ignorantiam and statistics of small numbers.

Clearly, you will never make it as a researcher.

Doggie, we can feel the hate seething from you. Do share with us those thoughts that go through your head when you hear someone speaking another language in public.

How do you know all which you wrote here? Have you taken a survey of the Hispanic community and their attitude to work? You simply fire out nonsensical conjecture to deflect the fact you hate people not like you.

It is clear that you have done significant research to come to your conclusions. Yeah, I'm being facetious. I have doubts you are capable and that makes me sad. What happened in your life to develop such spite? If someone is need, will you spit on the rather than make yourself available to help them?

Lone, again ... your reading comprehension fails you. I posted the PDF source document. Google it. Also, all population stats are census numbers. Most intelligent people know that is the one and only source for population data. Again, Google should help you there.

Shall we get you enrolled in a reading improvement class? I'd be happy to advocate you get some of your tax money used to have a local reading teacher provide you some tutoring.

Insult? There is no insult there. It is genuine concern for you and your chronic deficiency of mental rigor.

It is a pity you have so many poor relationships as to have received so many insults; all of this by your own admission. I have compassion for the pain you must feel because of the insults you welcome upon yourself.

You are correct, Lone. I have made it well past the remedial reading stage of life. And, I'm pleased you knew I had a lovely evening on the lake and the keel came out of the water nicely and turned over easily on my dock. I appreciate the sentiment.

Just let me know when you'd like to get started on those tutoring sessions. I'm sure some of the local school board members will help us set it up for you.

Wow. Henry you have convnced yourself your version of history is correct. My people settled the Dakota territory. And they spoke English. Our language was not an accident. It was decided. You can find that if you read more. The idea that whoever first came here should have their language spoken is ludicrous. Like Arabs thinking any land they lost in battle is Arab land. You are correct about hitting a nerve. I seldom meet someone I dislike so much. It's a shame people like you can live so comfortably or so long.
