Guantanamo Bay Should Not Be Closed

June 10, 2013

Most of the 166 prisoners being held at the U.S. prison at the Guantanamo Bay military base are more than “terrorist suspects,” the term used often to describe them....

The ones remaining at Gitmo are the worst of the worst. You're correct in saying about one-fourth of those already released broke their promises to not fight against the U.S. again. However, the ones that remain are unrepentant and will not stop trying to kill non-Muslims. Keep them locked up or kill them in the future.

I don't like the idea of holding people indefinitely without trial. We should uphold our legal processes uniformly. I don't see why they can't be kept in a U.S. prison. We don't need Gitmo or anything in Cuba, as there is no threat there.

How long should they be held, until they die? Should any Muslim be arrested and held in the "camp" forever? The prisoners are not being held as prisoners of war, but as enemy combatants - an undefined category. Can anybody be held at the camp, if the NSA or CIA or Department of Perpetual War dewcides they might be an enemy of the us? What about Mitch McConnell - can he be held as an enemy of the State?

No. The tramnpling started long ago, and incrementally advanced. Moreso in recent years since we became sheep and depend so much on the government. Obama lied when he said he would close it when he took office? He's so smart, but didn't know he didn't have the power? Make up your mind. We're past the point of "It's not Obama's fault." He's had five years. He's like Castro. Still fighting a revolution, but he's now "the man".

You must agree, 50s4ever, the trampling of our rights started with Bush and the patriotic act. Sure Obama is going along with it now - you seem to think a law like that can be re-written with the snap of a finger. Just like Seadog believes how easy it would be to close Gitmo. Grow some grey matter people. I do, however, love Maddog's idea of the GPS implantation. If only we could....

They declared war on us. They made the battlefield anywhere they walked. Or flew. They are POW's and treated extremely well. We should keep them more like Maricopa county and use them for trade. Closing Gitmo is political. Has been since day one. He could have done it years ago. He's throwing it out to get media attention away from his trampling the rights of us.

I was thinking the same thing fed up. Any information we could have gotten out of them, we have either gotten already or we never will. They have been locked up long enough now that they are out of the loop on current terrorist activities. However the author poses an excellent point, if released, I am sure many of them hold ill will told the is after being detained so long and will jump at the first chance for revenge. I say implant them all with gps and let them out. Maybe they will lead us to other terror cells.

Mixed feelings on this. Most there being held; for many years, without being charged. How does it look by the rest of the world about 'due process'. And what about the astronomical cost for these few detainees. And it really isn't up to just Obama to decide; congress does have a say, let them put forward a bill and let Obama either sign it or veto it.
