This is a very well written letter. I wholeheartedly agree with the author. I also agree with RT's comment. Too many parents are all too eager to let drugs take the role of parenting by chemically lobotomizing their "trouble" children. Give Suzy a pill, and then get back to Oprah before the commercial's over. They're too lazy to spend the time and effort in guiding their most precious blessings in this life. Some just want to be their kids' "friend", and don't want the confrontation of correcting improper behavior. Pay now, or pay later. I warned you, Gary.

I do not think the stigma associated with mental illness is anywhere near as bad as it used to be. I do think however that there is a trend in today's society to vastly over-diagnose and over-medicate. Especially with children. Just take a look at the most recent revision of the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). According to that 99.9% of the population is mentally ill. I do agree that those who need it should seek help. I don't believe however that nearly as many people need to be medicated as there are. We're raising a generation of medicated children. Wonder how this fares for the future?
