Manchin, Toomey Should Try Again

May 6, 2013

At another time, in a different context, Sens. Joe Manchin and Pat Toomey might have been successful in a proposal they and two other senators offered last week....

The gun show loophole is the lie. It's sale of personal long arms that doesn't require a background check, whether at a show or home or in the street. All handguns are required to go through a FFL dealer. Why is this so hard to tell the truth?

No they shouldn't. This bill does nothing to go after the real problem which is the wrong people getting guns. Criminals do not buy guns legally, therefore, they by-pass any background check. The bill does nothing to enhance the background checks so that the mentally ill will be denied legal access to guns. And, with the HIPAA laws, that information can be difficult to obtain. So, this law would be ineffective to resolving any of the problems relating to gun violence.

I would support a bill that would make certain gun crimes federal offenses with mandatory prison sentences of at least 10 years. Also, the existing laws in states need to be enforced, with tougher sentences. This would be a good start.

But, enacting another law, which has legal, law-abiding gun owners jumping through more hoops to obtain or keep their guns is ridiculous. They will do it if they have to, because they are law-abiding. It is not this group of people that are perpetrating the violent crimes. PJ, I disagree with your assessment.

I just love the way the P-J calls a Republican Filibuster "procedural matter". 90% of Americans want background checks. What does this say to you about the Republicans in Congress?

Fact:Most gun show purchases require a background check! Fact: You cannot buy a gun over the internet and have it shipped to your house! Fact: Criminals do not go through the legal means to acquire a firearm! Go figure! Fact: they do not adequately regulate or punish the current laws on the books! Why make more gun laws when they don't enforce the current ones. Go try to buy a gun at a gun show or over the internet before you talk about the imaginary "loopholes"!

If they would just try to pass a law about background checks only, they may be more successful, there always seems to be a deal breaker added to the bill.

Typical liberal distortion, Howard. You blame Republicans for blocking something that the overwhelming majority of Americans support. We ALREADY HAVE BACKGROUND CHECKS! The majority of Americans is not in favor of the Democrats latest efforts to put more restrictions on legal gun ownership. The truth is that only a very small minority of Americans think the government should be wasting so much time and energy on gun control. Same goes for comprehensive immigration reform. The vast majority of Americans think it's more important to enforce the borders and enforce the laws that are already on the books.

The infamous left wingers who bought guns over the intgernet or at gun shows without going through any paperwork have been used by the phobes as though it is the norm for the industry, and supported by the NRA. Not true. You can't blame NRA for illegal sales or stolen guns being passed on to thugs. Anyone making straw purchases nowadays is going to be caught sooner than later.

This article is a prime example of why I didn't get too excited when this paper was crying about their fist amendment rights being curtailed. You just used your right of free speech to mislead the public about the background bill that was defeated.

FACT-13 states enter 0 mental health data into the NICS system, at least that many more enter incomplete data. So much for restricting the mentally ill from getting guns

FACT-As previously stated the gun show loophole is a myth.

FACT- The 40% number is bogus.

FACT- Even though there was a item in the bill forbidding the data to be turned into a registry all the data would be there for the time when a few more liberals won elections and decided to change the law to allow it. It has happened before in both Calif and New York.

If the media would have done their job and explained the problems with the bill there would have been no controversy over it failing. Free speech doesn't mean free to lie.

Fact: 60 Minutes TV show bought several guns at a gun show with no questions asked. Fact: FedUpL8ly, you live in a delusional world if you think no one can buy a gun without a background check which the vast majority of Americans want. What is all this other "pork" you all are saying is being added to the bill? Nobody is taking away anybody's gun, yet a march on Washington with everyone toting a gun is being planned! There should be no problem with that. One lunatic is all it will take to fire one off and all*****will break loose. If you think all this hullabaloo is going to get the republicans back in the White House then go for it - it is only helping the liberal cause. All of those Senators voting down a bill that 90% of their constituents want, all I can say is good luck at the next election, you will need it!

Were they rifles and shotguns or handguns howard? What state were they in? Here in NY you have to pass a strict evaluation just to be able to obtain a permit to purchase a handgun and then have to get a background check again when you buy a handgun. That has been in place for a while. Yet handgun crimes are still quite prevalent in NY. I am not sure how this bill would change anything.

By Pete Williams, NBC News chief justice correspondent "Gun violence in America has fallen dramatically over the past two decades, and the number of murders committed with a firearm is down too, though guns are still by far the leading type of crime weapon, according to a new report from the Justice Department. As for where crime guns came from, the study notes that less than two percent of convicted inmates reported buying their weapons at gun shows or flea markets. The highest number, 40 percent, said the guns came from a family member or a friend. About 37 percent said the weapons were stolen or obtained from an illegal source. The rest say the guns were bought at a retail store or pawn shop.

Murders committed with a gun dropped 39 percent to 11,101 in 2011, from a high of 18,253 in 1993, according to the report"

That means that all the fuss over the Toomey, Manchin bill last couple months is over where two percent of the criminals got their guns. Any reason to believe they would have complied with the bill rather than get those illegally.

The other interesting tidbit is that as we have been stating right along, the semi-autos they tried to ban account for the least number of shootings.

Also, as we have been saying right along it confirms that even as the number of guns in private hands INCREASES the number of criminal uses of the guns DECREASES. Imagine that. Explain those numbers Obama/Biden, their from your own Justice Dept.

It is all Politics, Obama promised his base gun control in his second term and most gun owners are not liberal Democrats.

Even the left knows guns don't go out and kill people without a human hand guiding them. Focus on the real problem. Some talk about mental stability is little more than dangerous fluff. The 800 lb gorilla in the room is the culture. Not the camo wearing range rats with full auto (licensed) weapons, but the drug/gang gangsta heroes of the music videos burning into your kids' brains. Please...no "studies show" crap about how it has no effect. Garbage in-garbage out.
