I agree. Holding people responsible and accountable, not the knife, the gun, the bomb, or whatever instrument is punishing the OBJECT. If we drown in a lake, do we blame the water? Its about control, nothing more. It will make criminals out of law abiding citizens. Again, the constitution must be upheld, and we must stop the ridiculous notion guns kill. People kill, and until we can cure the mentally ill, cure anger, and outlaw greed, we have what we have.

Right right...more of the same...trying to limit magazine capacity is a huge deal right??? lol, no one is trying to take your guns away, so try to keep the crazy to a minimum, if you can.

Humans kill humans, sometimes they use knives, sometimes guns, etc...but we don't need them using guns that can shoot 40 bullets in 7 seconds. If you're really worried about not being able to own this kind of gun, while at the same time NOT worried that the gov't tries to control who can marry and which women has a right to their bodies...

You might just be crazy.

So please. Lets keep the crazy to a minimum. We have bigger fish to fry. Like the economy.

I guess corrupt dictatorial governments don't fear knives as much as guns, especially those that can shoot 40 bullets in 7 seconds. Wonder where they sell those?

I'm unsure about the effectiveness of additional gun controls, but come on, do you, the author, have to be told of the differences between knives and guns?

Umm, David, you've got your numbers messed up here. If you actually go to FBI.GOV and look at the 2011 numbers 8583 were murdered with firearms and 1694 murdered with knives or cutting instruments. The proposed legislation simply sought to make it more difficult for "bad guys" to get guns. the govt. is not going to take yours away, nor would there be a national registry. 2nd Amendment rights should not be extended to felons, mentally deranged and wife beaters. By fighting to preserve the gun show loop hole, you are aiding these people.

5 times the number of knife deaths over gun deaths? I simply cannot believe that figure. Better check that one again!

Since Obama became President over 15,000 people attempting to buy firearms have criminally failed the background checks already in place. Do you know how many of those were prosecuted? Exactly 44! You poor misguided souls that claim liberals don't want to confiscate guns aren't even aware of what was originally proposed. It banned guns already legal, called for background checks even if a father handed down a gun to his children and allowed any law enforcement agency to enter anyone's home at any time to check for weapons. Don't even try to imply the NRA is so all-powerful that they can stop Harry Reid from bringing Feinstein's bill up for a vote. Reid read the fine print and knew that it was so bad, his Senate Democratic majority wouldn't have given it more than 30 votes. And J'fan18 tells people that were against the proposed legislation they're crazy for their opposition and they should worry about the economy instead. Sounds like something he should be SHOUTING to Obama!

Letters like this illustrate the complete intellectual bankruptcy of conservatives, who seem to think they've made a valid analogy as long as they link up two different ideas with the phrase "is just like." When all your arguments are based on promoting fear and hatred and you willfully blind yourself to facts, it's time to find a new ideology.

Before you limit me to a 7-round magazine, please tell me how many seconds it takes a whack job to re-load knife. Also, check out Myth Busters recent test on "taking a knife to a gun fight". The knife wielder was surprisingly effective.

Coppergoat, by all means, let's advance arguments which "are based on promoting fear and hatred" of legal weapons and law abiding citizens. That's much better.

Coppergoat's stand is well proven by fan18's tying in abortion and gay rights with every conversation. The left just can't help themselves.

Isn't carrying a knife wih a blade over seven inches in public considered carrying a hidden weapon and against the law? So there are laws against certain knives on the books. Just like fully automatic guns or fifty caliper machine guns are illegal to to protect the public from missuse so what is wrong with banning large capacity assult weapons? Seems you are making a mountain out of a mole hill.

"If you're really worried about not being able to own this kind of gun, while at the same time NOT worried that the gov't tries to control who can marry and which women has a right to their bodies"

Amazing how the left can tie gay marriage and abortion into a letter about knives and guns.

To get media coverage, the story has to fit in with the bias media agenda. Look at the Kermit Gosnell trial. Oh, you can't because NO ONE is covering it, except FOX News. Thank you FOX News!!

Actually, the amount of deaths via knives is 6 times larger than only rifles. Compared to handguns, it is over 3x LESS (~1600 knife deaths, ~6200 handgun deaths, ~320 rifle deaths).

The writer is poorly mistaken. Then again, the writer starts with a poor premise.

One of the reasons large guns aren't used more often is because they cannot be concealed. Handguns are much easier to conceal. Knives have a larger prevalence than rifles in homocides but that is most likely because they are easier to obtain.

Common sense, regardless, would dictate that it is much harder to use a knife on a victim than a gun. Especially in the case of multiple victims.

You are correct on those stats and your reasoning as to why rifles are used less often irony. But the bottom line is, how many of those deaths were the result of the legal owner of a handgun using it in manner to cause harm? I think the bottom line of this whole gun debate is that no one agrees that guns should be in the hands of criminals. However, don't punish all legal gun owners for the illegal activities of those that will not adhere to the laws no matter what they may be. The whole idea of some of you saying people are overreacting and guns are not being taken away. Here is an analogy. It would be like saying ok we aren't taking away freedom of speech but it's illegal to use words more than 7 letters long. Even though you have no intention of doing harm with those words or hurting anyone's feelings, some people have, so now its illegal. Oh and if you want to speak at all, you have to undergo a background check to make sure you have never said a nasty thing to anyone else

1. The writer did make a mistake in that there are many more murders with knives than just all long guns. Of course it was just a segment of long guns used in less than 45 murders a year they wanted to ban which made no sense at all. 2. They do want to take your guns and in have in the past confiscated long guns in both California and New York. You should study the history of gun bans 3. Don't laugh about knives. After the liberals banned guns in Scotland (Piers Morgan's country) Violent crime went through the roof. They no longer have guns to blame so they outlawed knives and do random search's as Bloomberg is doing with guns and anyone caught carrying a knife faces 5 years in prison. 4. Obama has had 5 years to fix the present background check system but instead he just wants to add more work to a system that he has underfunded and one that doesn't work.

Time to stop with the tired argument that they aren't planning to take your guns away. All over the country States are passing laws to confiscate guns from law abiding citizens.Listen to the crybaby POTUS when he didnt get his bill passed. He said it wasn't everything we wanted but it was a start. You have to have your head in the sand to not think that is their ultimate objective. It's all about control.

I don't agree with heavy gun regulation but I also don't agree with ignorance with regards to statistics and logic.

Both sides of this "debate" are chock-full of absurd ignorance. That is the real problem here. Gun-phobics and gun-worshipers where there should be people seeking wisdom and truth.

Common misconception: Murders that are committed by knives and guns. WRONG! Murder is caused primarily by three things: Power, greed and people.

Knives are made for other purposes then killing, but guns are made especially and only for killing and can do with such much easier and in mass quantities. there is total common sense on limiting the abilities for people to commit atrocities, which we go to war with other countries for similar reasons. political groups such as the NRA make this a bigger issue then it needs to be. when the law was created people carried muskets and times have sure changed since muskets.
