People With Disabilities Are Winners Year-Round

April 5, 2013

To The Reader’s Forum: I would like to thank Governor Cuomo for taking $90 million out of the budget and giving 60 percent of it to the Buffalo Bills, simply because he thinks providing for people......

Absolutely agree that states subsidizing professional sports teams is rediculous. That is like a small business owner complaining about not having money to update facilities but giving each employee a multimillion dollar salary. Athlete contracts are out of hand. Every athlete now thinks that just because they were drafted, they are entitled to be set for life after thei first contract. I understand it's a dangerous sport but it is still just a sport. It shouldn't cost me 250 dollars to take my son to a bills game. The money should be better spent on things like funding for legitimate disabilities or education or paving 86 or tax incentives to bring new corporations into the state. Every year the gov throws millions to a buffalo sports teams in hopes that that will appease wny while the real money gets funneled into into Albany and NYC. Bud is right though talk is cheap, vote these morons out of office.

If one thinks player salaries are out of hand...don't go to a game. Tahat wayit won't cost $250 to take anyone anywher..and if people aren't attending to see a losing football team play, hopefully they'll either drop prices or go bankrupt.

You are absolutely right jazzie but on the other hand I do want my boy to have these experiences and memories. Just like I have with my father. If it was just myself. I would much rather be sitting in a comfy chair watching it from home and not freezing. Btw can we spend 90 mil and put a dome on that place. It's buffalo for crying out loud.

I have no gripe with the disabled but there is another side to this. Having worked night relief at a group home (many years ago while in college) the residents were treated very, very well with all kinds of goodies the average Joe could never afford....

Well duckster, I guess that's why the article is titled the way it is.

Maddog, you can build those memories right at home, you have home-grown baseball team, school football teams, etc. And what the writer is referring to isn't just referring to people in group homes, as he states, disableds are all around us. Must be awfully nice being naive to think they only live in group homes.

Why does a letter like this only garner less than ten responses, and something like giving equal rights to homosexuals garne 100+? Makes no sense to me.

Yep we do all that stuff. But there something about being in a stadium with 80,000 other fans. And I agree about the lack of interest from the usual commentors but I guess this ist as glamorous of a topic as guns or gay marriage can be to some people

No government money to pay for stadiums, professional sports teams and cozy deals for them. They should be on their own with no government subsidizing.

Really Duckster? My brother lives in one of the group homes and he doesn't have things I couldn't afford.

Sad fact: sports teams get government subsidies because their proximity generates big dollars for businesses. Disabled people don't. That's why pro sports get government subsidies and disabled people's programs get cut.

Don't forget, in American business and politics it's not about doing the right thing, it's about doing the profitable thing.

We are the government aren't about making money. We have voting proxies that we can use to get people in or out.

Seriously, I don't know why anyone would make comments like, "I wouldn't want to be in a shower with those kind of people". Just like saying, "I wouldn't want to be in a shower with 'those kind of people-meaning black/white/hispanic/ etc" They're human. You couldn't tell them apart, even if they came out and told you they were gay.

Like I said, the player (can't recall his name) caught a lot of flak and made huge apololgies to the inclusiveness god for expressing his honest opinion. Still waiting for an explanation how you guys can only have thoughts about other gay men, never straight ones. Wow. What control. So you could shower with women if you were straight then? Of course yuou aren't gay. You are just the white knights of the realm saving all the oppressed by censoring any other thoughts.
