‘Gay’ Debate Is Damaging To Boy Scouts

March 22, 2013

To The Reader’s Forum: I’m an Eagle Scout. I’m also a Scoutmaster. I’ve also remained silent for too long. Issue number one “gays in Scouts” first off don’t make this about the kids....

Once again, facts go by the wayside. Men can be girl scout troop leaders! I had a male troop leader and he was fantastic!

I disagree with the majority of the content but I do appreciate and respect the last paragraph. "This is solely my opinion. I take full responsibility for what I've said no matter the repercussions."

I am not an expert on the rules and regulations of Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts - but I would not send my daughter on an overnight trip with a male leader. I appreciate Ted's willingness to share unlike the comment that refers to hom as a loser pervert - not sure how it turns into a personal attack on the writer. Yet, I am thankful for our freedom of speech that is afforded each of us. Probably off base for this thread but I was wondering if anyone cares to comment on where so many of our laws were derived from???

Well said letter writer. The other point to be made is that by allowing and thereby affirming the gay lifestyle it sends the absolute message that it is ok, normal, acceptable and right. For many people it is none of those things, based upon their Bible or their own principles. Will allowing gay adults to be leaders enforce some boys to seek out that lifestyle as they grow older? I don't know. I would say that older (over 14 or 15) that want to tell people they are gay should not be forced out of their troop. This only ensures that they would feel like they do not belong and would really instill the idea that they belong to a fringe lifestyle. It is behavior not feelings that should determine if a boy scout is living up to the scouting code. If a boy that says he is gay but not engaging in sexual activity then he is still morally straight. That being said then it also holds that heterosexual boys that are engaging in sexual activity should be booted because that is not morally straight

No doubt, the BSA will be hurt and the gays could care less. Any child or male adult can be in the boy scouts provided they keep their sexual preference to themselves just like everyone else. This is not about the kids, but about the gay lifestyle. The BSA is not about anyones sexual preferences.

Quite the contrary 50's, I believe I just said I appreciate and respect people for taking responsibility for their actions. I appreciate facts more than opinions. It may be time for trifocals or at least adjust your computer screen so its a distance you can read.

A Scout is: Trustworthy Loyal Helpful Friendly Courteous Kind Obedient Cheerful Thrifty Brave Clean Reverent

Where does it say "straight"??

This has nothing to do with "Gays." It is the breaking down of time tested organizations. Just because someone feels strongly about something, doesn't make it a right. Leave private entities alone. If a group wants to make a gay scouting organization, have at it. Leave this one alone.

"For many people it is none of those things, based upon their Bible or their own principles." What if a straight Muslim boy wants to be a Scout? Many people disagree with the muslim lifestyle and religious viewpoints.

When I was a part of the juvenile system, we went on many camping trips with both male and female counterparts. The subject of sexuality never came up, it was taboo.

Sexuality is not part of boy scouts and the kids don't care about the sexuality of the next guy. Thats what makes this so clear, its a adult gay issue. Nothing to do with the kids. The kids are being used for the gay gain.

Recycler, sexual preferences is not an issue for the children in the scouts, we ADULTS are the ones making it an issue.

Why do people think that if I kid is in proximity to a gay adult, that the kid will become gay, like its contagious? I have been around gay people, yet, I am straight. Maybe my parents had me secretly vaccinated or maybe I am genetically superior and immune.

I think it was greg Rabb who was a scout and a leader and everything was fine which proves that gays can be in the scouts and be leaders. Its only when one wants to make their sexual preferences known that the scouts have a problem and the kids don't care about the next ones sexual orientation and i don't want my kids in scouts if its about sexual orientation.

What makes you think all gay people walk around shouting that they are homosexuals? My guess is that you have passed some in a store and never even knew it.....crazy. Also why do Puerto Ricans have a parade? Why do irish have a st pattys day parade? Why do we have a memorial day parade? Its just to show support for a group of people or to celebrate something that means a lot to those people. Just because the media shows clips of those parades showing cross dressers and flamboyant individuals, doesn't mean that is how they all are.
