Gerace: Bail Reform Wouldn’t Work Here

February 26, 2013

MAYVILLE — Bail reform in New York state may sound good on paper, but it won’t help solve congestion at jails. At least not here, Chautauqua County Sheriff Joe Gerace said....

Could it be that our jail is too nice? Geez, these guys might have to actually work/produce for a living.....now they have food, heat and ZERO responsibility. When the crocuses come up and it starts to get warmer, is it then they begin to get restless and want to be outside a little bit more. Let's make jail less tolerable.

With only 212 inmates, shouldn't we be looking at a merger? The graduating class is so small. I would think that a regional jail would be a better, more efficient answer to this problem. Has any merger been broached with Catt Co? Why hasn't the P-J pursued this?

Having taught GED classes as a volunteer many years ago at Elmira (before this correctional facility was changed to "reception" I can tell you this: about half the inmate population are social miscreants who are very young and really do not know how to function in society. Most are non violent defendants on drug related charges. If the average Joe had any clue how much it is costing us to babysit these people they would be in favor of any means possible to release them. The prison industry is big business now.. what a waste...

Gerace is a typical local politician, “Change it somewhere else, status quo here is fine, thank you.” Then he is really quoted "I would disagree with taking authority away from those who are elected to make those determinations." When the truth is most people who vote for a judge or Sheriff do so only because they want to fill a line on the ballot. The only time incumbents normally loose is when they are so awful or inadequate that voters actually notice them. Conversely, if you actually listen to these people they feel like they have a mandate because they were elected. Then Gerace thinks he knows more than New York’s Chief Judge. You gotta love guys like him. I’m just guessing but I bet he has probably lived in Chautauqua County all of his life, has maybe a Associates or Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Busti Tech or Cherry Creek Community College.

we should give them the option either go to jail or leave the county give them a bus ticket out of town, escort them to meet the bus, and follow the bus to the county line
