Animal Abuse Deserves Harsher Penalty

February 5, 2013

To the Readers’ Forum: After reading the article regarding ‘‘animal abuse’’ in Busti, I find it truly perplexing and upsetting that this cruel individual received only a slap on the wrist....

I didn't hear about this case, and don't know what it involved, but blatant animal cruelty should involve jail time.

I don't know the specifics of this case either, but often it involves mental illness. We keep pretending animal abusers and child abusers and other predatory types are bad but"normal". They are not. They need to be red flagged early on and we need to treat them weather they want to be or not. We need mental health courts. Sandy Hook could have been prevented.

I agree with carlaw, we need to deal with the mentally ill more effectively.

I was most horrified that she was allowed to keep five dogs and prevented from acquiring more for only a year. Whether or not jail time would be appropriate, I certainly don't think letting her keep animals was, even with occasional unannounced police inspections.

My thought was, "Obviously she should have committed copyright infringement instead. They would have locked her up and fined her but good then!" After all, we have our priorities!

I haven' decided whether this is right or wrong but I find it interesting that we treat animals better than humans. Visit any nursing home for awhile and it will break your heart. When my dog was alive I volunteered on Fridays with what they called comfort visits. The residents are great people but so lonely. From his experienced I have purchased the best long term care insurance I could find if I ever become unable to care for myself. It is called a 38 S&W. Trust me, after what I have seen there shall be no nursing home for me in any way shape or form. We need stronger death with dignity provisions in NYS much like they now have in Vermont...hmm

Hurry duckster. The dems want to have you evaluated and take that .38 away so you aren't a danger to anyone. How do hyou figure on sneaking it into the hospital after the ambulance hauls you away unconcious with a stroke or heart attack? With alzheimers you'd forget what to do with it, and who it was you intended to relieve.

So everyone's an expert on mental illness..just give everyone a happy pill and they'll be fine. I wonder how many mentally ill live around YOU, are treated without happy pills and functioning just fine.

IF we outlawed breeding of animals for personal gain, this would never have existed. I do not understand all the details, but I do know money is always at the root of all evil. Look at our government! I do not think making profit off animals breeding should be allowed without a permit and home checks. We kill 6 million a year in shelters, with no end in sight. Ban breeding for 5 years, and some of this will resolve itself. Greed..its all about making money on the sale of these dogs. Look at welfare, and check craigslist if you want to see abusers...people without money, on government handouts breeding for money. Its an epidemic.

"I wonder how many mentally ill live around YOU, are treated without happy pills and functioning just fine."

Depends on the type of mental illness. If its schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression, then not many of them do 'just fine' without mediciation.

But isn't that an affront to your rights?

take overburdoned's statement:

"I do not think making profit off animals breeding should be allowed without a permit and home checks. We kill 6 million a year in shelters, with no end in sight. Ban breeding for 5 years, and some of this will resolve itself. Greed..its all about making money on the sale of these dogs."

And change a couple words:

"I do not think owning certain guns should be allowed without a permit and home checks. We kill tens of thousands a year in shooting, with no end in sight. Ban these guns for 5 years, and some of this will resolve itself. Greed..its all about making money on the sale of these guns."

Its funny how things work both ways.

NY, especially Chautauqua county DOESN'T do enough to people who abuse animals, they gotta get strict laws and punishment for the sake of the animals and NEVER be allowed an animals again. Puppy mills are horrible. They shouldnt have let her have any dog back, how stupid

As far as what I've read in the comments , and the problem with the person in question is , There was no speak of puppy mills .Then the subject matter went to totally different area. There does need to have new LAWS on the books for abuse to animals and people being abuse, To much slap on hands are going on. Need the old laws back where you commit the crime and the crime is punishable in the same way as it was done. NO jail time . Why should we pay for a loser to be in jail when he or she kills? That's not a punishment. Animal abuse ,abuse the person or persons the same as the animal they abuse. Child abuse, Do the same to them or even find a farm that has baby calves on . Take the criminal out there for a day or two and tie him in the corner naked mouth tape shut and let the calves lose. Now the abuse that woman seem to be getting allow them do what ever they need to do to get their point across to that abuser. All laws need change back to the OLD days.

This thing about being mentally ill and can't remember , is B.S. They know about just what they are doing and think it's funny that the defenseless creature can't do any thing and even if it would ,that would enrage the person more to abuse the animal more, that includes the victims of sexual abuse and ALL abuse.
