Second Amendment Is Not For Hunting Purposes

January 30, 2013

To The Reader’s Forum: I read with interest Sam Alessi’s endorsement of NYS’s newest gun legislation. I would like to point out that the MI Garand was initially built around a 10 rnd clip magazine....

I can see how they went there, and how the 10th would be to keep slavery too. I really have to re-read the constitution with help from Gates and West and their students.

Ahhh..that's it. the smirking chimp Thom Hartmann, buddies with Olberman, Maddow, McDonnel, and Shultz. I'll wait until I see the actual writings of the period untouched.

I've done fairly extensive reading on that period, and I never have seen that statement anywhere. Point me to the right place pbj.

The real reason the Second Amendment was ratified, and why it says "State" instead of "Country" (the Framers knew the difference - see the 10th Amendment), was to preserve the slave patrol militias in the southern states, which was necessary to get Virginia's vote. Founders Patrick Henry, George Mason, and James Madison were totally clear on that . . . and we all should be too. In the beginning, there were the militias. In the South, they were also called the "slave patrols," and they were regulated by the states.

Cleveland police shooting and chase makes cops and guns look bad. Unreal. Too much TV.

Zillions of blogs claiming there is a loophole that lets you buy any kind of guns over the internet or gun shows without checks. What they don't tell you is each case was an illegal transfer. There is no loophole that allows handguns to be transferred anywhere anytime and it's a federal law.

I think it's sad how Americans have blindly believed that the Second Amendment was designed for hunting and home invasions. It's as if they've never read a history book. They've had the luxury of living in a plastic bubble of a country where freedom has, in their lifetime, always existed, all while forgetting that they are reaping the benefits of a bloody time when that freedom was in jeapordy. This country was founded on the basis of liberty. Not from criminals or even terrorists, but from government. And the second amendment was designed to preserve that liberty.

I don't recall hearing the term "assault weapon" until the early 1960's wehn Stoner/Armalite systems were the new kids on the block. We alwasy looked at the AK 47s as assault weapons. We thought we used rifles and carbines. Sturmgeweher basicly meant assault wepon to the Germans in WW2.

I don't know why lhyou don't believe it Pharyngula. Military officers have a career that depends on their being evaluated by political correctness that starts with the Cdr in Chief, the Secretary, and all the flag officers n down the line. It's just like the work place. When I say the left, I include you. That's where you are. Don't you recognize all the campaign rants for the last two years?

Something that can be folded up is easier to conceal and get inside to kill people easier than a longer shotgun.

I stand corrected shotguns with folding stocks exist. How many people in NYS have them? What is their necessity for sporting use that over rides their danger?

"Semi-automatic shotguns with one or more of the following: Folding or telescoping stock Pistol Grip Fixed capacity of more than 5 rounds Detachable magazine."

Is your shotgun a semiauto with detachable magazine? I've not seen the other banned features on shotguns.

"The changes in New York are largely cosmetic," said CNN legal analyst Paul Callan, who described existing regulations as "the toughest gun laws in the United States." "The one change that arguably will have the greatest impact is the amendment to Kendra's Law, which will permit closer monitoring of the mentally ill." That 1999 law grants New York judges the authority to require residents to undergo psychiatric treatment if they meet certain criteria. The new measures will extend Kendra's Law through 2017, expand outpatient treatment from six months to a year and require reviews before such treatment is allowed to expire. New York's mental health professionals will be governed by a new and controversial set of rules that require them to report their patients to the state should those patients exhibit behavior suggesting that they could be harmful to themselves or others."

Isn't this what you say you want?

"It's what you all claimed the right was aginst and made them racist homphobic xenophobes who want to go back not forward. " Can you show where I said anything like that? Can you expand a bit on the influence of the left in the military ? Are there liberal officers who promote other dangerous officers so the military will crumble some day? If a liberal officer forced another conservative officer to promote major Hasan wouldn't that have come out by now or will it come out in the courts martial? Would the officer that was forced to make a promotion that resulted the death 13 deaths be to shy to talk about it? Do liberal magazine articles force commanding officers to promote people they would not have? Hasan was radicalized by a religious fanatic and went way off the deep end.

YOu nailed it Darkstar. I haven't even shot an animal in many years and won't unless times get tough. But it's nice to know somebody isn't cooking up a new idea to take a gun I've had for decades because some nut used one like it. Notice some of the guns Pharyngula mentioned in his numerous posts of slaughter. Hunting guns, house guns.

No matter what your take on this is, the New York State government has awaked a sleeping giant. I didn’t really understand how I felt about gun rights until Gov Cumo stole some of them in the middle of the night. I own two guns; a shotgun and a .22 rifle. I haven’t shot either one in a couple of years so I don’t think I qualify as a gun nut. I use both for hunting when (and if) I find the time. The point is I feel more violated about this that I really ever thought I would! I will remember someone who cuts into the bill of right and tells me it’s for my own good. Where was the normal process of discussion and procedures for deciding on this legislation? Why the middle of the night? Mr. Cumo was sure his approval numbers would “drop a little”. I won’t forget. I will vote for almost anyone who opposes him at the next election. By the way I voted for him last time; I won’t be doing it again. We really don’t need a sucup governor with national political designs running our state!

Pharyngula if you can't admit the left is behind political correctness with the inclusion and diversity lies you can't have a conversation. It's what you all claimed the right was aginst and made them racist homphobic xenophobes who want to go back not forward. The military is just as pressured as any gov agency to play the game. Generals are politicians or they would be Lt. Colonels. The military is run by politically appointed civilians, not soldiers. 10:25 AM "If most guns used in crime were stolen then we would attack the problem differently"...you're words. I pointed out you are wrong.

Which of the examples were done by gangs? I didn't notice any, there may have been a few. Gangs have no problem getting guns, drive to another state and have a cousin or girlfriend make the purchase.
