Lets look at the real facts.

1. JTown's 60 cops and 55 FFs serve a much larger population than just the city.

2. The number of officers JTown has is at the extreme low end of the scale for city's this size.

3. There has been a 20% cut in PD and FF officers in the past decade and less than a 3% reduction in population over the same period.

4. The city is looking at merging its PD with the county to cut and spread costs.

5. Watcher02 obviously didn't read the full speech and reports on the PJ web site.

Lets look at the facts:

JPD=60 cops for a city of 30K

J fire dept = 55 firefighters for a city of 30k

Total= 115 at a cost of $9,872,721

FINALLY: The mayor doesn't want criticism on how the city is being run

"The Sheriff department originally was to run the jail and serve warrants "

Yes, in 1811. In this day and age, even the rural public deserve the same service and protection as townsfolk.

This county will have one school district and one law enforcement agency in the next couple of decades. Or it dies.

Its quite clear that most of those commenting on this story didn't even read the article.

They certainly didn't read the entire speech and related reprts, which are contained for all to see on the PJ web site. If they did, maybe just maybe they would not be making all of these ridiculous comments.

A couple of these folks sound like disgruntled ex city employees who either got fired or lost their jobs in previous city down sizing efforts. See the chart in the printed version of the PJ

These comments are truly sad and embarrassing.

What is really amusing in the printed paper is that it says “The city will support and assist the county in marketing commercial airline service at the Jamestown Airport”. The picture of the airplane is a B-25 Mitchell bomber. While I would like to take a ride in one, I don’t think it would be cost effective for commercial use!

Sorry Mr.Mayor but the state of the city is horrible. First off you raise your salary and our taxs every time. As for our police dept. How about firing all but the the chief and 2 fulltime officers and replacing the rest with part-time officers with no bennifits. Goto a volunteer fire dept make all the people on welfare that are able to work serve as a volunteer firefighter problem solved as far as manpower. I have seen your hard working bpu leaning on shovels while one man works. You see them riding around in trucks all day. The electric dept is a joke the rates are way to high. Oh and Mr.Mayor before I forget if a city is not growing it is dying. Do you see any growth other than a coffee shop?

Go and look at the J-town 2013 budget. The total amount of money the city spends on cops and firefighters is $9,872,721 or 29.72% of the city budget. This is insanity for a city of 30K. The mayor doesn't want criticism!!!!!!!!

You have cops making 80k to 100 k a year in a city of 30k. WAKE UP MAYOR. The city is broke under your leadership. This must be a priority is to reduce J-town head count and consolidate the police department. Yes:you deserve this criticism

Just a way of trying to ligitimize the sheiff as "real police" in the eyes of NYS so thy can get better pay, benifis, and pensions at same level of real police officers. Don't think for a second Joe and his CSEA buddies don't have an angle on this merger. Just look how CSEA has served county ax payers with county home. Look who always comes first to them.

I disagree with a merger. The Sheriff department originally was to run the jail and serve warrants , my how it has changed since power trip Joe has ruled. Jamestown can't afford a merger with Joe and neither can county. Big mistake

Dissolving the police and using the Sheriff's authority in the city would be the best thing, and could create a snowball effect countywide.

On a cautious note, 2013 may be the year the fund balance dries up.
