You nailed it this time PJ! Great editorial! But now what are we going to do to make parents and students acquire a sense of personal responsibility and work ethic? That's what it takes for success in school. We need to stop rewarding the cultural behavior that makes people dependent, and reward behavior that is independent and productive for that individual or family.

Carlaw your idea would gut the Democratic party.

Why would one need to do well in school when there's welfare as a guaranteed career in this state?

The state should make welfare tied to how the kids do in school if the kid has a 50 average they only get 50 percent and if they have a 90 average they get full benefits ....boy would the welfare recepients wake up in a hurry!

Dark77 that would be hailed as racist. Like stopping big gulp cokes in NYC.

We have a whole new crowd of parents out there. With Jerry Springer devotees and children raising children the cause is lost before it has begun... hmm

Right duckster. Funny how we sound like our Fathers isn't it? He thought we were undisciplined! He wouldn't be able to watch TV now or walk down the street near a middle school.

I don't want to gut the Democrat party 50's. They are the Loyal Opposition. It's not a party thing. It's a freedom thing. We should want to free people from the slavery of government dependency and poverty and free taxpayers from government oppression and control. We need a plan for reform that works for everyone. Our goal should not be to kick the most vulnerable in the teeth when they are down. We need Democrats, Republicans, Working Families, Independents, Conservatives, Greenparty,etc.... and everyone to help us do this. Right now some one else is in control and pulling the strings to bring our country down, not we the people. The poor and dependent think it's all about "free stuff". It's not. It's about control. It's about Freedom. I am worried.

Another facet of this issue is the misconception that each and every student is destined to be a doctor or lawyer. Society needs employees at all levels, and our education system and government only seem to focus on the highest level. Thus, we are doing a massive disservice to those people that will ultimately end up on the lower end of the educational scale. Better training should be provided for all students based on their individual skill levels, without degrading them in the process. All that being said, a great editorial and very good comments. It's a start!

The Democrats wouldn't exist as a party without daily telling people of color it's those evil white people (not progressives of course) oppressing them and that's why they get knocked up, strung out, jailed and dead before their time.

it's a shame that education is wasted on a few.

the only things that would "gut" a political party are plans like those in the works to rig elections, like in Va. and Mich.

This editorial is correct and to the point. I must give kudos to the PJ!! (And, I don't do that very often!)

Education is required allie. What you do with it when you turn teens is up to you. Bad choices are your own. Yeah, I remember the union mobs and destruction in Wis swaying elections.
