"Common sense can win," Cuomo said. "You can overpower the extremists with intelligence and with reason and with common sense."

This can't be true, or Mr. Cuomo would have never passed this poor excuse of legislation to begin with.

Now we have to renew our license every five years and I'll bet there will be a fee each time. There will probably also be a fee every time for the background check to buy ammo. Also, how is 7 rounds safer than 10 rounds? Just knee jerk stupidity!

Registration is the first step to confiscation, just like California did!

Who are these "extremists"?

Who do they threaten? Where do they operate? How many have they killed?

Increasing the frequency of gun registrations is just a money grab for the state. Pure and simple. Period.

You can find a full copy of this law on Buffalo's WIVB**** As a gun owner I do agree with parts of this law however. Why was it never open for debate? We never had a chance to review the bill or voice our opinion with elected officials. This is not democracy it borders dictatorship. This time it's our guns next time it could be anything..Don't forget NYC has a ban on handguns and soon will ban large soft drinks. If a madman wants an assault rifle he will find one regardless of any law. This new law clearly states " Any costs related to this bill will be paid out of the Division of State Police capital budget. Does this mean we will not have to pay a fee to recertify our handgun permits every five years? Probably not.

The new law should have required a psychiatric exam for anyone trying to buy an assault style rifle or gun.

"A free people ought to be armed."...George Washington. "The beauty of the 2nd Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it", "The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear armed is as a last resort to protect themselves against tyranny in government."... Thomas Jefferson. Our country fathers knew what the 2nd Amendment was for. Our politicians are ignoring it or have plans. Yet, I am still afraid to send my child to school. Please, remember this when you vote next time. Any more blood shed is now on our politicians hands.

Thank you Cathy Young for using some common sense. The only way to curb gun violence is to make the laws so hidious for the law breakers, no one in thier right mind, for the most part, would never consider breaking the the law to begin with. The law abiding citizens seem to foot the bill for almost anything anymore. Now law abiding pistol permit holders have to re-register every 5 years ???? How much is THAT going to cost the law abiding citizen ??? What a HUGE knee jerk answer.........

zedman it's painfully obvious that you haven't read what's in the new law.

you cannot purchase assault weapons anymore.

do you need a mental health eval to purchase a colonial weapon? get real.

nobody has specifically said what the recert (recertification) process will entail. a renewal fee--well duh! NYS will not let this opp to make more $ slip away. a mental health eval every 5 years when you renew? why not? nobody knows.

"It also requires background checks for even private gun sales, except those among immediate family."

So, an 18 year old with down syndrome can now be sold his/her father's gun collection, and ammunition, for 22 cents? Makes me feel safer! Thank you Cuomo! What is up with this part? Seriously!

If I'm reading the law correctly, tube feed 22RF's are exempt from this nonsense. Therefore I can load my Remington Nylon 66 with the full 14 rounds that it will hold, but I can only put 7 rounds into the detachable 10 round magazine of my Ruger 1022? There's a prime example of the "brilliance" & "logic" employed throughout the entire piece of legislation. Accidently plunk an eighth round into the 10 round magazine of your classic Colt Woodsman, and you're automatically a criminal? Where is the logic in behind the magic number "7"? What purpose does it serve, other than to harass, to make you think of "big brother"?

Here's another jewel. Section 37, subdivision 22 starts out: "Assault weapon means..... Then scroll down to item "G. Provided however that such a term DOES NOT include: II. A semiautomatic rifle that cannot accept a detachable magazine that holds more than five rounds of ammunition." WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN? ANY semi will accept a 5+ round magazine if somebody bothers to make one! A then there are those hunting rifles which came standard with a 4 or 5 round mag, but for which there are 5+ "after market mags available. Ie. Remington's classic 740-742-7400 series, Winchester 100. Are they now assault weapons? If they are, a lot of people are going to be surprized!

Passed in the dark of night, with no input from the citizens it will effect and without time for the legislators to read it...just the way all good legislation is passed. Can you say Obamacare?
