Elections Bring Out The Worst

This election season has made me realize what it is about politicians that I envy. True, I always marvel at any given candidate’s energy, capacity for feigned congeniality and willingness to kiss even the ugliest baby. But I’ve never been able to put my finger on what might provoke feelings of jealousy. Until now. It is the luxury and cathartic pleasure of regular outrage. Media releases are always spewing forth expressing exactly that severe state of mind as regards some comment of an opponent or, with increasing frequency, comments of someone, somewhere who might support their opponent. No one is ever miffed or slightly perturbed. Not a chance. There is no middle ground in aspiring to the highest plateaus of power. Do not pass GO, do not collect $100, do not be only peeved. Proceed directly to outrage. Too many examples abound this election year to choose.
