Honoring Those Who Served
SALAMANCA — Instead of just remembering the past, former American Legion Commander and U.S. Army Veteran Stanley Grochowina is taking steps to make sure students continue to honor veterans in the future. Speaking during annual Memorial Day festivities recently, Grochowina announced his plan to raise money for plaques recognizing veterans of recent wars. It would be hung at the Salamanca City Central School District. Since Memorial Day, he has been working to make the plan a reality. He has recently written area businesses, organizations and past Salamanca school students seeking support. “While attending events that my daughters were participating in ... I would always read the two plaques honoring World War I and World War II veterans word for word every time I entered the (school) building,” he said in the letter. His idea, he said, is to add plaques listing Salamanca residents who served in more recent wars.
