Group Wants To Make Salamanca ‘Walkable’
SALAMANCA — If someone wanted to walk through Salamanca, how easy would that be? About 20 people headed to the streets Thursday to find the answer to that question. Instead, they found a pedestrian crossing that didn’t work, some confusing signage, a sidewalk that stopped in the middle of nowhere, dangerous intersections and more. The group will now document what they saw and see what can be done about the ‘‘walkability’’ of the city. The walkability tour was done by those looking to make Salamanca a healthier place after Cattaraugus County’s Health Department and the YMCA received an $80,000 grant to do so. Justin Booth of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership and Joshua Poppel of Alta Planning and Design visited the city to lead the three-mile tour.
