Stoddard Shoots 69 To Qualify For 50th Porter Cup

LEWISTON — Chris Stoddard shot 1-under-par 69 at the Niagara Falls Country Club on Monday to qualify for the 50th Porter Cup amateur golf tournament July 22-28. Ninety-three golfers competed for six qualifying spots on Monday and Stoddard, who will be a sophomore at St. Bonaventure this fall, got that lost spot. He shot an even-par 35 on the front nine with a birdie at No. 1 and a bogey at No. 2. Then he parred the next 15 holes before he birdied the 18th hole. And he did it dramatically by chipping in from 20 yards with a 58-degree wedge. Without that birdie, Stoddard would have been in a playoff with 14 other players tied with 70s. It was Stoddard’s second attempt to qualify for the Porter Cup. Last year he failed by shooting a 79. When asked the difference, a 10-stroke difference, this year, the Southwestern Central School graduate said, ‘‘Just the whole college experience. I wasn’t nervous at all. I just had fun. Last year I felt like I had too much pressure on me.’’ Stod
