Light Flares At 10 P.M.
We echo Nansea Meyer, who, with her husband, moved here from Atlanta after retiring, wrote to the Readers’ Forum: 10 p.m. is the traditional hour that flares are to be lit for the annual Ring of Fire celebrating the Fourth of July on Chautauqua Lake. If everyone lights them at the same time, there truly is a ring of sparkling jewels encircling the lake. For the past few years, though, some folks — newcomers, we imagine — have been lighting the flares way too early so that they burn out before the traditional 10 p.m. start time. This leaves gaps in the ring when everyone else sets off the flares at the regular time. The flares are an annual fundraising project for the Chautauqua Lake Association — which, somewhat bizarrely, by the way, says on its Web site the Ring of Fire ‘‘event starts at dusk’’ on July 4. No. It’s 10 p.m. Always has been. Always should be. Meanwhile, this can be a busy weekend for boaters. Please, everyone, be safe out there. Obey speed limits on area lakes. On
