100 Years Ago In 1909, a mysterious spring supposed to have its source somewhere in the vicinity of Brooklyn Square had been dried up for good. The source was discovered by Superintendent Immel of the water department. It was an old unused and unknown water pipe on Taylor Street. The pipe was discovered by workmen digging a trench for a sewer on Taylor Street. Superintendent Immel declared it was city water and shut the service off. The water disappeared. It proved to be an old unused service of which the department had no record. Probably half a million gallons per year leaked through this old pipe. The $2 million Criminal Court building in New York City had been ordered vacated as it was feared it would collapse.
