24 Days of Gadgets - Day 10
December 10, 2009 - Dave Hecei
The paperless office is just a myth. The printer is still a very important part of any computer system. You would think in the Internet age we could get away without paper. E-mails, attached documents, and web pages are just easier to deal with as a printout. Having a ‘hard copy’ is another way to back up. If you tend to print text document, where color is not important, then a laser printer can save you money.
Monochrome laser printers cost only slightly more than a color inkjet printer, but the cost per page can be only a few pennies. Inkjet printers are great for photos and colorful printouts, but for professional looking text you just can’t beat a laser printer.
Brother makes some amazing personal laser printers. They are small, fast, and inexpensive, plus they all work with Mac OS X. The HL-2170W is perfect for home, student, or small office use. It has a maximum speed of 23 pages per minute (ppm), holds 250 sheets of paper, output resolution up to 2400 by 600 dpi, and can output the first page in less than 10 seconds.
The best feature of the 2170W is its networking capabilities. The 2170W can connect to an Ethernet network, plus it has built-in WiFi 802.11b/g. There is also a USB port to connect directly to a Mac or Windows PC.
The Brother 2170W, like other Brother laser printers and fax machines, use a separate drum and toner cartridge system. Other laser printers use a single piece unit, which is much more expensive. With the Brother you just add more toner when it’s low. Toner is said to last up to 2600 pages and the drum up to 12,000 pages.
If you want the best looking text in a document or newletter, check out a laser printer. For a great deal on a networkable, wireless or wired, laser printer, check out the Brother HL-2170W. Street price is around $140. I have seen holiday sales prices for this model down as low as $100.
