25 Days of Gadgets - Day 12

December 15, 2008 - Dave Hecei
One of the most popular gadgets this holiday season seems to be the GPS personal navigation device for your car. GPS stands for Global Positioning System, a system of orbiting satellites that sends signals allowing these devices to pinpoint your position on the earth. A GPS device in your car allows you to drive while the navigator, the GPS unit, gives you directions to your destination. Of all the personal GPS devices out there, Garmin makes some of the best and most popular models.

The Garmin nüvi 760 has all the best features. It is very thin, 0.8-inches, and has a large 4.3-inch wide-screen color LCD display . Unlike some previous models, the nüvi 760’s antenna is built-in, there is nothing that sticks out or flips open.

To operate the nüvi 760, just turn on the power and wait for the short “boot up”. When it is ready, just choose your destination by entering in the address on the touch screen. It takes only a few minutes to get the current information from the GPS satellites overhead and it then quickly maps out your route.

As you drive, the nüvi 760 will give you vocal instructions. The nüvi 760 will announce street names or ramp numbers, instead of the generic ‘turn right in 500 feet’ instruction. Having the street names spoken to you will help eliminate any confusion.

The nüvi 760 is more than just a navigator. If you have a Bluetooth capable cellular phone, the nüvi 760 will pair up with it and act as a hand-free speakerphone. There is also an SD memory card slot allowing you to use it as a photo viewer or an MP3 player. It can even be used as an audio book reader. Sound output can be heard through the built-in speaker or through your FM radio, when using the cigarette power adapter. This works great for traffic alerts, your cell phone calls, or twhen playing MP3s or audio books.

For those power shoppers, there is a great feature called last location. You set the nüvi 760 when you find a parking spot and then take the unit with you. When you’re done, the nüvi 760 will find your car for you. For those who live in a more urban area, where traffic is a major problem, the nüvi 760 comes with a  subscription (three months) to one of Clear Channel’s live traffic service.

The nüvi 760 is the ultimate gadget for those of us who seem to live in their car. It’s great for anyone who commutes daily, travels for business, or even for that vacation getaway. With a GPS navigator you won’t have to pull over and ask for directions ever again.
