Kindness and Cake
December 24, 2012 - Liz Skoczylas
Once again, the kind acts of others have left me pleasantly surprised after this weekend.
Saturday, my friend Felicia and I trekked to Erie to pick up some final gifts. We stopped at Five Guys on Peach Street for some lunch (yes, that IS a bag of grease on the table in the picture! Yum!) and grabbed a table by the door to sit, eat and chat. We were in the middle of our lunch, when two women, about the same age as us, set a card on our table, said, "Merry Christmas," and walked out the door.
At first, I thought they were handing out religious flyers, or random coupons they weren't using. But, looking at the envelope, there was a quote about kindness from Ann Curry on one side, and the hashtag #26acts on the other. When we opened the envelope, there was a Christmas card inside, along with a lottery ticket.
"This is #15 of the 26 Acts in honor of Anne Marie Murphy who lost her life at Sandy Hook Elementary School," The card read. "Please, pay it forward. Merry Christmas!"
Our one ticket ended up being a winner for two more free tickets, which we have yet to cash in on. However, even if those next two don't hit the jackpot, knowing that there are people out there that are participating in acts of kindness is jackpot enough.
In wedding-related news, we have cake!
We recently went cake tasting to a couple different area bakeries, which was amazing. Hearing the great ideas that bakers had and how they could incorporate what we wanted in with their talents was a lot of fun!
In the end, the prices for what we wanted ended up being very similar. Each bakery had its own distinct taste and style. But, we went with 3C's Catering to do our cake.
First of all, the sugar work they are able to do is amazing. And, I bet you didn't know that they enter cake competitions. And, I'm telling you, their carrot cake is THE best-kept secret in the area. Even N, who I can't get to eat veggies, loved the cake. So, we are very, very, very happy with that decision!
We also have other good news... We found an apartment in N's fire district! And, they will let our puppy in! It looks like our move date will be mid-January, which we are very much looking forward to.
Finally, a very merry Christmas to everyone reading this, and all of your families. I hope everyone is safe when traveling for the next several days. And, enjoy being with loved ones! Merry Christmas!
