Westfield Residents Appreciate Crews’ Work On Christmas Day

To The Reader’s Forum:

On Christmas Day at approximately 12 noon the power at our home in Forest Park in Westfield went out. Within half an hour we received a text message alert from the Village of Westfield notifying us that a tree had taken down power lines on Route 5 at Gun Club Road. This necessitated the closure of Route 5 between Hawley Street and North Portage Road. We were also notified in that text message that a crew was being called to address the situation. Later in the afternoon I walked up to Route 5 from our house in a driving snowstorm to find the Village Electric Department and Fairpoint Communications working diligently to restore power. I could also see dedicated members of the Fire Department of Westfield blocking both ends of Route 5, redirecting traffic away from the downed tree and power lines. Just as it was getting dark that afternoon the crews were able to successfully restore power.

I am sure the last thing those who worked for several hours on Christmas Day in blowing and drifting snow with 40 mph winds hitting them in the face was to be called away from their families to restore power to those of us who live along Route 5. We want each of them to know how much we appreciate all they did in brutally tough conditions to help us salvage a memorable Christmas. These public servants represent all that is good about Westfield. Their strength, sacrifice, and resiliency is a true reminder of the meaning and enduring spirit of Christmas.
