We Have The Right To Protest

To The Reader’s Forum:

Yes, Mr. McGinnis, you and I stand because of our family, our history, our environment. My father served in the Pacific during World War II; my brother served in the U. S. Navy. I stand because that’s my belief. My parents, my brother and I have never been asked to drink from another water fountain; have never been asked to use another door; have never experienced being the minority in our world. Those men (right now, everyone is focused on the NFL) are kneeling because of their beliefs, their family history, their position of being a minority.

As a guest in our city yesterday, Floyd Adams, says, “the First Amendment has come to have enormous impact in protecting the people from governmental suppression.” He authored a new book, Soul of the First Amendment.

This is the United States of America. We have the right to protest. Some scholars might say we have the obligation to peacefully protest. Just because our form of protest is different from theirs, Mr. McGinnis, doesn’t make theirs wrong or unlawful.

Understanding the rights and responsibilities we have as citizens of The United States of America is what we need to pass along to the next generations!
