Assault Weapon Ban Is Limit On A Right; Not Elimination Of A Right

To The Reader’s Forum:

Why does a civilized society have laws? To make sure that one person’s actions don’t take away or harm the rights of another person.

Laws put limitations on rights. For example; a speed limit is imposed so that excessive speed doesn’t result in harm to people and property. It does not affect one’s rights to own or operate a vehicle.

A ban on assault weapons is a limitation on a right. It is not an attempt to take away a person’s right to bear arms. With regard to the issue of the founding fathers’ intentions in amending the constitution, it is safe to assume they did not envision the citizenry armed with high caliber automatic weapons, capable of holding an unlimited supply of ammunition.

According to the NRA, any limitation on the right to bear arms is a violation of the Second Amendment. So, where does one draw the line? Should we then allow everyone access to their own nuclear warheads and ICBMs?  Of course not!

This is not an attempt to prevent citizens from forming a militia, or hunting, or protecting themselves. This is a reasonable limitation on a right; one that provides the greatest protection to the greatest number of people. That is why it should be the law.
