Theft Of Guns Should Serve As Reminder To Secure All Weapons

Too often, crimes are committed with weapons that have been stolen.

Two such weapons were taken off the streets last week after Jamestown police charged two male youths with the theft of several items that included an AR-15 rifle and a loaded handgun. An investigation was launched after numerous larcenies were reported in a five-block area in the city’s north side. Police were led to the two juveniles after one of them attempted to use a stolen credit card at a local convenience store. Police obtained surveillance video from the store, and from there investigators were able to identify the pair.

Sometimes, it’s better to be lucky than good — and that’s exactly what happened last week. Were it not for a stolen credit card and quick work by the Jamestown police and partners within the Jamestown Public Schools District, two guns could have fallen into far worse hands than a pair of teenagers. Last week’s incident should serve as a reminder to all gun owners to secure their guns properly inside their home. It’s hard to fathom the logic used to justify leaving guns inside a car when there are a multitude of relatively inexpensive ways to secure a weapon inside one’s home. Teens stealing items from cars is a common occurrence in Jamestown, but teens finding guns inside vehicles just shouldn’t happen.

Gun owners can get a bad rap in our current national political climate, but legal gun owners who don’t properly secure their weapon deserve that bad rap.
