Democrats Need To Stop Playing ‘Gotcha’ Over Immigration

Democrat leaders in Congress have made it clear they have no desire to reach a fair compromise on immigration. After weeks of accusing President Donald Trump of not offering a proposal, their reaction when he did so last week was, “No way!”

Trump’s plan may not be perfect, but the basics of it are good. It is a starting point for compromise.

Liberals have claimed the president wants to deport about 700,000 “dreamers,” illegal immigrants who came here as children.

Not true. Trump’s plan would allow virtually all of them — and members of their immediate families — to remain in the United States. It would offer a pathway to citizenship for an estimated 1.8 million people.

Trump also wants money to improve border security. Funding for “the wall” is part of his deal. So are provisions meant to restrict immigration in the future.

House of Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., claimed Trump’s plan is “an unmistakable campaign to make America white again.”

It is no such thing, and Pelosi knows it. She and fellow liberals should stop playing “gotcha” and work with Trump on a reasonable immigration bill.
