Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

Thumbs up to all of the dedicated actors who have taken to the stage in recent weeks. Recent editions of The Post-Journal have detailed performances of “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” by the Winged Ox Players, which ends tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Willow Bay Theater; the Ripley Library Players’ production of “Murder on the Petulant Express” and Rick Mascaro’s production of “Harvest Moon at the First Presbyterian Church in Westfield. And, it won’t be long before the Lucille Ball Little Theater’s season begins. Chautauqua County is blessed to have people who are willing to share their talent on the stage — though we note that local theater production are always in need of more such people.

Thumbs down to yet another corruption case involving New York state government being overturned on appeal. Earlier this week, former state Senate leader Dean Skelos and his son were granted new trials in their corruption case after a federal appeals court cited a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that has already unraveled convictions of other powerful politicians. The court found the jury in Dean and Adam Skelos’ case was wrongly instructed, in light of a recent Supreme Court ruling narrowing the definition of what it takes to convict a public official. The ruling came less than three months after the same court reversed former state Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver’s separate corruption conviction on the same grounds. Together, the cases brought about the downfall of the state’s two most powerful lawmakers. Skelos is a Republican, Silver a Democrat. The facts haven’t been called into question in either case, which makes it disappointing that taxpayers have to be on the hook for another expensive trial.

Thumbs up to a pair of Silver Creek Central School graduates who have been drafted to play in the National Lacrosse League. Zed Williams and Frank Brown were drafted by the Georgia Swarm; Williams was the fourth player selected in the draft while Brown was selected in the third round. Williams’ time at Silver Creek saw him score the most points in the nation’s history with 729, breaking the former record by more than 100 points. Lacrosse fans who want to see the local natives in action won’t have to wait too long — the Swam play in Buffalo against the Buffalo Bandits on Feb. 10 at the KeyBank Center.
