Tragic Fire Helps Remind Us Of Our Community’s Spirit
The Wednesday morning fire that destroyed a building in Falconer is tragic in so many ways.
Dozens of families will have to start over after losing everything they have. Business owners are without their shop and inventory and employees are without their livelihoods. A building owner is left with what will surely be piles of bills related to the demolition of the building. Least on the list is the lasting change the fire will leave on the landscape of Falconer.
In the face of so much tragedy, though, we are reminded once again of our community’s spirit of togetherness. Firefighters from nearly a dozen area fire departments stood side-by-side to fight the blaze. Jamestown, returning the favor from a massive blaze on First Street more than a decade ago, helped their volunteer brethren. Facebook was buzzing with people willing to help with children’s clothes for those who needed them. We’re sure these stories are just the start.
Our community may not have all of the retail shopping options of Erie or Buffalo. We may not have massive amusement parks in our backyard. No matter our disagreements, no matter our political quarrels, we come together in the face of tragedy. We saw another example of that Wednesday — and we’re sure we will see it in the weeks ahead as we rally around those affected by this fire.
