Financial Carrot Moves Ideas Forward

Chautauqua County is making progress when it comes to regional solutions. The most recent evidence of this is the county is one of six finalists for a $20 million grant from New York state.

Last week, area officials found out they were one of six to become a finalist for the best government efficiency grant. There are many things working in our favor. First, the dissolutions of Forestville and Cherry Creek are viewed as positive by many in the state.

Secondly, there are bigger plans on the way. One of the most significant is the north county regional water district, which continues to make strides.

“There’s no doubt in my mind the future of Chautauqua County includes evaluating areas where we can restructure and right-size government services so we can be as efficient as possible,” said County Executive Vince Horrigan. “Understanding change in demographics and population shifts, we’re definitely on the right move.”

Many regional ideas do not take off due to worries about where the funds will be coming from. The $20 million is quite an incentive — and reward — for continuing to make some tough, but logical, choices.
