Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

Thumbs up to a partnership between the Robert H. Jackson Center and St. Bonaventure University. The partnership agreement allows St. Bonaventure students and staff to access Jackson Center archives. History courses will be developed based around the use and analysis of the Jackson archives. A technological link will also be developed between the two entities, and an internship is being planned to help the Jackson Center increase its digital archive capacity. One of the ways the Jackson Center can keep Robert H. Jackson’s life work relevant is by spreading Jackson’s thoughts and writing to the next generation. Agreements with nearby colleges and universities is a wonderful way to accomplish that goal.

Thumbs down to another reckless situation involving a firearm. A Silver Creek man was taken to the Chautauqua County Jail earlier this week after allegedly shooting three rounds from a long gun near two people, resulting in charges of charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree menacing and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a residence. Our political environment is not an easy one for gun owners. Their lives are not made any easier when people handle guns poorly.

Thumbs up to all those who attended this week’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative working group meeting. About 80 area residents attended the meeting, which focused on goals, strategies, visions and possible projects for Jamestown’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative plan. After the consultants discussed the planning process, those in attendance were separated into groups to discuss goals and potential actions to create a more vibrant downtown. Typically, these planning processes play out with no idea what money will be available for projects. The DRI is different in that we know the projects being discussed have a chance of becoming reality pretty quickly. It’s good to see a healthy turnout at these meetings to make sure the money is spent on projects the community wants to see happen.
