Downtown Cameras Pay Off

We’re not sure what two Jamestown men with a loaded gun were planning last week.

Thanks to a new public safety camera system purchased with grant money provided by the Johnson Foundation, we never had to find out.

Jamestown police were called to the area of 708 E. Second St. for a report of two men acting suspiciously inside a vehicle. The men tried to run but were caught quickly. Inside their vehicle police found a loaded 9 mm pistol. The security camera near the location allowed a police officer at Jamestown police headquarters to observe the men on the camera system and relay information to officers responding to the scene.

Knowing the cameras are both operational and being monitored should give criminals a reason to pause, at least when they’re inside the confines of downtown Jamestown. It’s wonderful when the cameras help police catch someone after a crime is committed. They’re even better when they prevent a crime from happening in the first place.
