Craig D. McDonald

Craig D. McDonald, 93, of 4799 Steward Ave., Ashville, NY, passed away at 12:30 a.m. Friday, May 4, 2018, in the Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility.

A lifelong area resident, he was born March 7, 1925, in Jamestown, N.Y., a son of the late Leo Benedict “Ben” and Marjorie Hill McDonald.

Craig was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from Sept. 11, 1942, to Feb. 17, 1946, during World War II. During his tour of duty he survived the Battle of Iwo Jima and earned the World War II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal with one star and the Good Conduct Medal.

In earlier years he had worked for the Packard Family Estates in Lakewood, N.Y., and prior to his retirement was employed by the Loranger Manufacturing Corporation in Warren, Pa.

He was a member of the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club, the Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion, Celoron. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending time working outdoors.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary M. (Matthew) Ray of Norristown, Pa., Jean A. (Scott) Lewis-Bean of Ashville, N.Y.; three sons: Dennis L. McDonald of Lakewood, N.Y., John C. (Debra) McDonald of Ashville, Christopher L. (Dana) McDonald of Dow, Ill.; three grandchildren: Jennifer C. McDonald, John C. McDonald both of Ashville, Joshua S. (Irene) Lewis of Cheektowaga, N.Y.; and a great-grandson, Brayden Lewis.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, the former Marjorie Bieber McDonald whom he married Dec. 15, 1946, and who died Jan. 30, 2014; three brothers: Quinton McDonald, Jesse McDonald and Joseph McDonald; and four sisters: Anne L. Proudman, Linnea McDonald,Leah McDonald and Sheila McDonald.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Visitation will not be observed. Inurnment will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.
