Sanford G. “Ollie” Olson
Sanford G. “Ollie” Olson, 87, of Jamestown passed away Saturday (Dec. 2, 2017) in UPMC Chautauqua WCA.
A lifelong area resident, he was born Jan. 23, 1930, in Jamestown, the son of the late George A. and Vivian Warner Olson.
Ollie was a 1950 graduate of Jamestown High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War from 1951-53. He was employed by MRC-SKF as a senior inspector for 40 years retiring in 1991.
Ollie was also a 50 plus year member of the Henry Mosher Post 638, American Legion having served as past commander by proclamation and was currently serving as chaplain. He was a 50-year plus member of the Boy Scouts of America Alleghany Highlands Council and was the recipient of the district award of Merit and Silver Beaver. He was a member of the First Luth-eran Church having served on the Worship and Music Committee, church council and was chief usher. He was also a member of the Chautauqua Lake Fishing Association, Thule Lodge, Vikings Lodge and Mt. Moriah Lodge 145 F&AM.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, fly tying, woodworking, cabinet making and was a gifted artist both in painting and drawing.
Surviving are his son, Randall G. Olson of Jamestown; a grandson, David G. Olson of Falconer; his daughter-in-law, Kathleen “Kitty” Olson of Falconer; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis C. Ahlstedt, whom he married Nov. 1, 1958, in First Lutheran Church, and who died July 24, 2014; two sisters: Lillian Carlson and Beverly Eckess; two brothers-in-law: Adolph Carlson and Edgar Eckess; and a nephew, Donald Nor-din.
The funeral will be at 11 .a.m. Friday in the First Lutheran Church, Jamestown. The Rev. Dan Nagle, pastor of First Lutheran Church will officiate. The Henry Mosher Post 638 will conduct military honors. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.
Friends will be received by the family from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. The Mt. Moriah Lodge will conduct a masonic memorial service at 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
