Marie Edith Carlson Nelson

Marie Edith Carlson Nelson, 96, of Jamestown, N.Y., passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017, at Lutheran Social Services, Jamestown.

She was born on Sept. 17, 1921, in Jamestown, N.Y., the daughter of the late John and Emma Smith Carlson.

Marie was raised and educated in Jamestown, N.Y., and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1939. She had lived in Jamestown most of her life, except a few years she lived in Buffalo, N.Y.

Marie was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she had served on the council, as a greeter and on other committees. She was a treasurer and past secretary of the Sunshine Society. Marie was actively involved in the AARP- Jamestown Chapter No. 334 and a treasurer for eight years, 50-year member of Independent Order of Vikings and 50-year member of Thule Lodge and former member of The Lodge Drill team. She was a member of Jamestown Senior Center, Kiantone Seniors, Roger Tory Peterson Institute, Jamestown Audubon Society and Y.W.C.A.

Marie had worked over thirteen years in the Jamestown City Hall offices of the Board of Public Utilities, part- time at Bassett’s Jewelry and in the offices at Brostrom’s for many years. She retired from the Jamestown General Hospital in 1988 when it closed after working part-time for seven years.

She is survived by her daughter, Brenda M. Nelson (David) Klenk of Gray, Maine; two sons: the Rev. Dr. Gary B. Nelson of Sharon, Pa., and Kevin H. (Jan) Nelson of Bemus Point, N.Y.; grandchildren: Brianna B. Nelson, Garrett M. Nelson; step- grandchildren: Joshua Densmore and Christopher (Kara) Densmore; and a great-granddaughter, Avery Marie.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Harold LaVern Nelson, whom she married on Aug. 16, 1952, and who died on Nov. 3, 1988; two sisters: Margaret C Knott and Catherine C. Kettle.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home, 316 E. Fifth St., Jamestown, N.Y.

Friends and family may attend a funeral service on Friday, Dec. 1, at the Tree of Life Evangelical Lutheran Church (Immanuel Lutheran Church site), 256 E. Second St., Jamestown, N.Y., at 11 a.m. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Pastor Tara L. Eastman will officiate, pastor of the Tree of Life Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Burial will be at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Lakewood, N.Y.
