Charles “Charlie” A. Reed Jr.

Charles “Charlie” A. Reed Jr., 69, of 2322 Fox Road, Ashville, passed away on Friday, Oct. 6, 2017, in UPMC Hamot in Erie, Pa.

An area resident all of his life, he was born Oct. 30, 1947, in Jamestown, a son of the late Charles A. and Margaret Stratton Reed Sr.

Charlie and his wife, Patricia A. Hedstrom Reed, whom he married on Oct. 7, 1967, would have cele-brated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday.

He was a 1967 graduate of Panama Central School. He served his country for two years of active duty in the U.S. Navy and was also in the Navy Reserve Service for two years.

He attended the Church of the Nazarene and was a member of the Chautauqua Lake Snowmobile Club.

Charlie was a well known and well loved man in his community. He operated his own backhoe business and was a natural at it, usually relying on his own ability to do whatever it took to do the job and do it right. Whenever he was asked about how he leveled out the work so well without a transit, or asked where the transit is, Charlie would reply “in my back pocket.” He just had an eye for leveling driveways, putting in septic systems, and etc. Everyone called on him. He also dug graves for many years at cemeteries around the Panama area. In earlier years, he had worked at Fairbank Farms.

He loved to mow lawn, nearly a half-mile from his house to Goose Creek he kept it mowed and clean. He loved nature and got lots of deer when hunting. He was a family man and loved his family. Also, he went to the Round Table in Panama nearly every morning and enjoyed meeting many of his friends there. People remembered him sitting at the picnic table at Crouch’s Garage talking with people as they came out.

He did most of the work on his own house, and even built a mantle on the fireplace. He went to the woods and cut the lumber and took it to the Amish to get it finished, and put bolts in it so it would not crack. Charlie was an outstanding worker with the lathe. If he could not find a part he wanted or needed, he would go in his shop and make it himself.

He was very self-reliant. Pat remembers coming home one day and discovered that Charlie had gone to the woods that day and uprooted five large trees and simply planted them in the yard. In the winter months Charlie loved to plow snow and had up to 60 driveways to plow.

In addition to his wife, Pat, he is survived by a son, Tim (Heather Leigh Edwards) Reed; two grandchildren: Owen and Aysia Reed; a sister, Marilyn Stearns; two brothers: Donald (Sandy) Fuller and Doug (Debbie) Fuller; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017, in the Church of the Nazarene, 405 Howard Ave., Jamestown. The Rev. Walter Hedstrom, his brother-in- law and Dr. Mark Hanson, will officiate.

Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in the Lind Funeral Home and for one hour prior to the service Thursday (from 10-11 a.m.) in the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Panama Fire Department, 27 Main St., Panama, NY 14767, or the Ashville Fire Department, 5338 Stow Road, Ashville, NY 14710.
