Joyce Helen Olson

Joyce Helen Olson, 94, formerly of 193 Hotchkiss St., Jamestown, N.Y., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017, at Heritage Village Rehab and Skilled Nursing, Gerry, N.Y.

She was born July 1, 1922, in Jamestown, N.Y., the daughter of the late Edmund and Doris Johnson Ahlstrom.

Joyce was raised and educated in Jamestown and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1940. She worked for the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System for 32 years in Jamestown.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Jamestown. Joyce was a past member of the Mozart Club and the American Scandinavian Society.

Joyce loved to travel and enjoyed her summer visits to the Pacific Northwest. She traveled with her Tacoma, Wash. family to Alaska and to a retreat camp in the Pacific Cascade Mountains. She traveled to Sweden with a choir group and to many other locations in our country.

Joyce played Bridge with the same group of best friends for more than 40 years. Her door was always open and there was always a place at her table. Her extended family of Doug and Valerie Skuggen, and their children made any occasion special. Her humor and friendship was endless and loved by all. There are no words to describe her devotion to her family.

She is survived by two sons: David Paul (Kathy) Olson of Tacoma, Wash., and Douglas Robert Olson of Little Valley, N.Y.; her daughter: Julie Olson Gable of Jamestown, N.Y.; six grandchildren: Andrew Gable of Jamestown, N.Y., William Gable of Salt Lake City, Utah, Kathryn Curtis of Jamestown, Jonathan Gable of Jamestown, Peter (Suzanne) Olson of Portland, Ore., and Timothy (Jill) Olson of Seattle, Wash.; seven great- grandchildren: Mia Gable, Peyton Truver, Taylor Truver, Camron Curtis and Szaria Gable, all of Jamestown, Brooke Gable of Grand Junction, Colo., and Abraham Olson of Portland, Ore.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother, Donald (Sue) Ahlstrom.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the James Prendergast Library, 405 Cherry St., Jamestown, NY 14701, or to the First Lutheran Church, 125 Chandler St., Jamestown, NY 14701.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2017, in the chapel of the First Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dan Nagel, pastor of the church, will officiate.
